Charleston County's Coroner's Office says the man has died who police accused of shooting and killing Shane Whiddon, the late former chef at Charleston's Virginia's on King restaurant.

Thomas Burns, 54, of Charleston, died Thursday at Palmetto Health Richland hospital from complications of a gunshot wound he received during the incident at Virginia's on King Aug. 24.

Charleston Police say Burns, a disgruntled former Virginia's employee, came into the restaurant, shot Whiddon, then took several people inside the restaurant hostage. Whiddon later was pronounced dead at MUSC.

Burns was ultimately shot by Charleston County authorities who entered the restaurant to end what had been a nearly three-hour hostage standoff, which resulted in a large portion of King Street and several crossing streets being closed.
