KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. (WACH) — A toddler is dead after an accidental shooting in Lugoff, according to the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office.
Officials say deputies received a call around 10:40 pm at Sherwood Forest Apartments.
The caller reported a 2-year-old was accidentally shot by a gun she got off a dresser, according to officials.
After WACH FOX News spoke with Kershaw County authorities, Sheriff Lee Boan says they have no reason to believe it was anything other than an accident.
“So far preliminarily, we haven’t found anything to lead us to believe it wasn’t anything other than an accident", said Boann "That’s where the investigation has led us.”
People in the area also told WACH FOX News that the community is devastated, and the little girl was playful and spent a lot of time on the playground in the apartment complex.
“She was always out here just running around, having a good time", said a resident. "She would bring sunshine to everybody and she was a beautiful little baby and she will definitely be missed.”
Multiple deputies and South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers responded within minutes and began to provide medical aid to the child.
The Lugoff Fire Department and Kershaw County EMS also responded.
The child did not survive, due to the gunshot wound sustained.
KCSO investigators, Kershaw County Coroner’s Office, SLED’s Child Fatality Unit, and SLED’s Crime Scene Unit are investigating this incident
