Orangeburg Co. Sheriff: Inmates assaulted guard during jail break

The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office provided an update Sunday afternoon on their search for three escaped inmates, saying the men assaulted an officer during the incident.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell told the media the inmates escaped the Orangeburg County Detention Center after assaulting an officer. He also says the men had planned their escape.

The following inmates are currently at-large and are considered dangerous:

  • Tyshon Demontrea Johnson, 27, charged with murder
  • Curtis Ray Green, 20, charged with murder
  • Christopher Shannon Boltin, 27, facing carjacking and grand larceny charges

Authorities say the incident happened just before 10 p.m on Saturday night. Investigators responded to the detention center after a call of an attempted escape. The sheriff's office identified the missing inmates early Sunday morning.

A local Orangeburg resident, Clinton Briggman, says deputies were searching the area well into the night.

"My mama came home, she wake me up," said Briggman. "And she said, 'Keep your door locked. Because three of them just escaped from the county jail down the street.' I said, 'What?!'"

Briggman said he usually walks the road near the jail on his way to the local convenience stores, but now is taking the advice of authorities to be aware and stay indoors.

"I hope they get them," he said. "Because there's no telling what they might do if they come up on you. No telling."

Sheriff Ravenell says SLED, as well as neighboring police and sheriff's departments, are assisting in the search.

Anyone who knows the inmates' whereabouts should call the sheriff's office at 803-534-3550 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
