Cancer survivors honored at Sunday's Fireflies game

Columbia, S.C. (WACH)-- As hundreds of fans gathered to see Columbia's Fireflies take on Charleston's Riverdogs at Spirit Communications Park, there were a few special fans in the crowd celebrating more than just America's pasttime.

The Lexington County Medical Center sponsored it's Cancer Survivor Baseball Game on Sunday, highlighting brave Midlands individuals who beat the odds.

The survivors wore green, and were not only honored with free food and seats, but also a victory lap around the field at the start of the game.

One breast cancer survivor, Ojetta Williams, says it meant a lot for her to hear the fans cheering over the hurdles she and others overcame to be at the event.

"The day after we're diagnosed, we're survivors," said Williams. "I'm just appreciative that they thought enough of us to honor us today."

A portion of the proceeds from the ticket sales were donated to the Lexington Medical Center's Cancer Care Fund.
