COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – The City of Columbia is issuing an important announcement from the Columbia Police Department, the Columbia Fire Department and the Richland County Sheriff’s Office.
Citizens in the City of Columbia and Richland County are urged not use the Text to 911 feature that was announced by Richland County Friday, according to the City.
The City says while they’re “excited” about the new technology, they say they feel it’s not in the best interest of public safety to launch this new feature during a critical weather event.
Text to 911 is currently identified as being in the pilot project stage and once all the features of the new system have been tested and all staff have been properly trained, it will be launched on a full-scale basis, according to the City.
The City is urging all citizens to use the traditional method of calling 911 for all emergency services.
