A man who was injured in a shooting on Rosewood Drive Saturday afternoon has died, nearly nine hours later. It happened outside The Little Gym on Rosewood Drive around 1 p.m. The area was shut down for nearly three hours as investigators processed the crime scene.

Columbia police say the victim was shot to the upper torso and was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, where he died. He was 30-years-old. However, there will be no charges filed, as the shooting death has been ruled an act of self-defense.

"It was revealed that was an argument between two individuals that started inside. It moved outside. Upon that, there was an exchange of gunfire," said Blair.

Investigators learned the decedent was initially armed with a knife and made threats before taking a handgun out of his car. He's accused of firing the gun at the man he argued with, who subsequently returned fire, resulting in the fatal injury.

After the shooting, the uninjured man immediately called 9-1-1 and surrendered to police when they arrived on scene. A Columbia Police Department spokesperson says the uninjured man lawfully possessed his weapon and properly stored it prior to the shooting.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office plans to conduct an autopsy Sunday morning and will confirm and release his identity after family notifications have been made.
