Community faith building shot multiple times by vandals

Columbia, SC (WACH)-- A local faith community and law enforcement are trying to figure out who would shoot at church property.

Leaders at the Word of God Church found one of their buildings riddled with bullet holes.

Sixteen shots fired through the doors of Word of God multi-use building on Garners Ferry Road.

Church Bishop Eric Davis, believes it happened early Tuesday morning after multiple vandals used the doors as target practice.

"Apparently some youth took some shots at a door, and a little vandalism was going on,” Davis said. "What it says to me is that they're young people with no supervision that need to be mentored.”

Davis is thankful no one was hurt but said multiple ministries occupy the building daily.

The church offers programs that cater to the community, giving young men who commit similar acts an opportunity to better their lives.

Davis is hoping to use this as a learning experience, targeting young people like the ones targeting doors.

Less than 30 feet from the vandal's target, a group of students developing new skills and trades about construction.

Kelvin Felder, Director of Student Operations for the Construction Training Center said the program offers a second chance. "It's wonderful to know that a person's life can change in a matter of four short months,” Felder said. "We have a lot of students who come directly here who have just been released from prison."

Felder said the doors remain open to those seeking knowledge and skills that will help with getting through life.

As Felder creates opportunities, Davis knows the mission must continue.

"The lesson to all of us, rather than cry about the doors,” Davis said. “Lets see what we can do as a community to help the people who vandalize doors."
