Crash after police chase leaves two dead

Damage to sign from Meeting Street accident

CAYCE, SC (WACH) - Three people are dead following a police chase that started in Cayce.

An attorney representing the City of Cayce tells WACH Fox police noticed suspicious activity and an open container of alcohol in a car near Maurice's Barbecue on Charleston Highway.

The officer attempted to pull the car over, but the driver drove off.

According to the attorney, near Charleston Highway and Knox Abbot Boulevard police lost sight of the driver and stopped their pursuit.

Moments later, surveillance video obtained exclusively by WACH Fox News shows the car crashing into a sign pole in West Columbia in front of the Goodwill on Meeting Street.

According to the Lexington County Coroner's office the unidentified driver of the car was taken to Palmetto Health Richland for treatment. The two passengers in the car, Ashley Brittner, 22, of West Columbia and Michael Cason, 53, of Lexington, were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to family and friends the driver died at the hospital, however that has not been confirmed.

Lt. Jeff Simmons of the Cayce Police Department did not say why officers were pursuing the Ford Fiesta, but he said the chase had been called off by the time the car entered West Columbia.

West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall said his department was not involved with the pursuit, but adds they are investigating the crash.
