COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH)-- The father of former University of South Carolina women's basketball player Alaina Coates died in a car accident Tuesday.
According to the Richland County Coroner, 55-year-old Gary Coates suffered from cardiac arrest while driving along Links Crossing Drive in Blythewood.
The Coroner stated that while driving Coates' went into cardiac arrest and his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and truck a tree.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy indicated that Coates suffered from a cardiac event that caused his death and there was no trauma from the vehicle incident.
The death has been ruled from natural causes.
Cardiac arrest usually results from an electric disturbance in the heart is often confused with a heart attack. The main symptoms include loss of consciousness and unresponsiveness.
