Gamecocks earn 2-seed in NCAA tournament
The South Carolina women's basketball team learned their fate in the NCAA tournament Monday night as it was "Selection Monday" in the women's basketball world.
The Gamecocks received a 2-seed in this year's tournament in the Albany region. They will take on (15)North Carolina A&T in the first round on Friday at Colonial Life Arena.
The bigger news for South Carolina is that they're in the same region as overall #1-seed UConn and they two could meet in the Elite 8.
"Everyone says that if you're in a bracket with UConn, it's a dead-end," Gamecock star A'ja Wilson said. "But at the same time, it's not impossible. We saw what Mississippi State did in the Final Four (where they beat UConn) so you never know."
After the bracket was revealed, head coach Dawn Staley made it clear she once again wasn't happy with the region the Gamecocks were placed in. She feels their fans (the highest-attendance in the country for women's basketball) deserved to go to Lexington so they would be able to drive there.
"It seems like time and time again, we always get the short end of the stick," Staley said. "And I know people are gonna say I'm complaining, I'm doin this, I have to speak up for my program! I don't think there's anybody in that room speaking up for our program!"
The Gamecocks will open play against North Carolina A&T on Friday, March 16th at 7:30 pm. (7)Cal vs (10)Virginia will play before them at 5 pm and the winners of those games will play at Colonial Life Arena on Sunday afternoon in the 2nd round.
