Girlfriend sentenced to 15 years in prison in shooting death of former SC State athlete
A 28-year-old woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with the 2013 murder of a former South Carolina State University football player.
Ashley Renne Butler pled guilty in court Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter for shooting her live-in boyfriend, 25-year-old Otis Matthew Key, Jr.
Eleventh Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard commented that “since I took office last year, one of my goals has been to resolve old cases pending in the 11th Circuit. I am thankful that this family now has closure for their loss.”
On April 26, 2013, Butler shot and killed Matt in the home that they shared on Lanier Road in Johnston.
On the morning of the incident, a neighbor called 911 after Butler came out of the home stating that Matt had been shot.
Butler's account of how the shooting occurred was not supported by the physical evidence obtained by law enforcement.
The couple began their relationship when they attended Strom Thurmond High School. Upon graduation in 2006, Matt enrolled at SC State University where he played football until he graduated in May of 2010.
The couple had two sons together.
During the sentence, Matt's parents expressed that they were thankful to finally have closure.
