WACH: Henry McMaster wins first full term as South Carolina governor
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – Henry McMaster won his first full term as the governor of South Carolina, defeating Democratic gubernatorial rival James Smith Tuesday night.
The former Lt. Governor enters his first full term since stepping into the job for former Governor Nikki Haley, who was tabbed as the Ambassador of the United Nations by President Donald Trump a little more than a year ago.
The 71-year-old McMaster served two terms as the state’s Attorney General and previously led South Carolina’s Republican Party. He lost a previous gubernatorial bid in 2010 to Haley, coming in third during a four-way GOP primary.
Pamala Evette will work side-by-side as McMaster's Lt. Governor.
McMaster faced off against four other Republican challengers for this year’s primary election. He was pushed into a runoff where he defeated Greenville businessman John Warren.
