Inmate dies after fight at Lee Correctional Institution

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (WACH) -- An inmate has died after a Saturday night altercation at the Lee Correctional Institution.

The fight occurred Saturday evening, injuring an inmate. He was transferred to a local hospital, where he passed away around 6:37 p.m, according to Lee County Coroner Larry Logan.

Logan identified the inmate as Christian D. Ray, 22. According to Sommer Sharpe, spokesperson for South Carolina Department of Corrections, he died due to injuries sustained from the fight. He was serving a seven-year sentence for an attempted armed robbery in Richland County. He was admitted into SCDC in October 2014.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.

What caused the fight is still unknown at his time. The South Carolina Department of Corrections is investigating the incident.
