"It's an insanely good time for Amazon" Local retail expert talks future of online retail
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- It's a huge day for Amazon. The giant online retailer has essentially invented a new shopping holiday in July that lasts 36 hours. It's known as one of the biggest online shopping days of the year. Just within the first hour of Amazon Prime Day, the website shut down from all the online traffic.
The "holiday" has seen more sales each year, partly because shoppers have been given more time to browse for deals. Last year, Amazon extended its shopping time from 24 to 30 hours. Now, shoppers have 36 hours to browse for the best deals. Retail expert Karen Edwards calls it a digital transformation and brick and mortar retail will have to find innovative ways to compete.
"Millennials don't want to go to a brick and mortar store and wait in a long line. This was nothing 5 years ago. There was no prime day. Now it's billions of dollars worth of sales due to amazon's ingenuity," said Edwards.
Amazon Prime Day started Monday at 3 p.m. and ends Wednesday at 3 a.m.
