"It's not normal here. It's upsetting" Bamberg community reacts after couple found dead
Investigators now have a new detail in the deaths of a missing Bamberg couple. Deputies say they know how and when 35-year-old Janis Natos and 38-year-old Jamell Carter died. The Bamberg County coroner says both of them died from gun shots to the head. And now, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is helping out with the investigation. It's almost been a week since they were found dead. Authorities say Natos and Carter were found at the Rivers Bridge State Park in Bamberg County last Friday.
Trent Kinard serves on the Bamberg County Council and says the community has been talking about the couple ever since they were reported December 12th.
"When you live in a small community, there's not a lot of exciting news. This isn't exciting but it's devastating and it's big news. I have heard a lot of people saying 'why?' That's the big question. I think the last murder we had was 5 or 6 years ago," said Kinard.
The Bamberg County coroner thinks someone shot and killed the couple on the day they went missing. Investigators are treating the case as a homicide. Kinard says word is that the couple was trying to complete some sort of sale.
"It had to be someone they knew, is what the community is saying. Maybe it was someone they knew that had to go out that late at night. She was still in her pajamas, left her purse at home, so it wasn't like they were trying to leave home. Everyone was concerned foul play may be involved," said Kinard.
