LCSD: man shot by deputy wanted for attempted murder

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department has identified the man killed in Thursday night's officer-involved shooting.

Justin Coy Adkins, 44, from St. Matthews was fatally shot by a deputy after presenting a weapon. Adkins was wanted in Orangeburg County for attempted murder.

According to LCSD, deputies attempted to pull Adkins over on Shumpert Road around 10 p.m. on Thursday. Adkins failed to stop and led deputies on a pursuit.

Adkins stopped near Mimosa Drive and Fish Hatchery Road after deputies deflated his tires with a deflation device. As deputies approached the vehicle, Adkins pulled out a gun. A deputy fired at Adkins, and he was pronounced dead by EMS.

SLED continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting per protocol.
