Local jeweler charged in connection with multiple burglary investigations
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – Columbia Police Department investigators have charged a local jeweler after he allegedly bought merchandise without a permit.
Gregory Wayne Gibson is charged with fifteen counts of precious metals, violations by dealer.
Gibson is the owner of Gibson Jewelers, Inc. on Rosewood Drive and is accused of purchasing more than $149,000 worth of jewelry (gold, silver, precious metals and stones) from a suspect in Sept. 2017.
Gibson’s precious metals permit, allowing him to purchase such items, expired in Sept. 2015.
It was also determined that the merchandise was stolen during several home burglaries in the Lake Katherine and Old Woodlands area in mid-August to early Sept. 2017.
As a result, William Curtis Young was charged with seven counts of first-degree burglary, five counts of receiving stolen goods and grand larceny.
A majority of the stolen items have been recovered by CPD.
Investigators continue working to determine if Gibson knew the merchandise was stolen when he purchased the items.
Gibson and Young were booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
