One dead after boat hits dock on Lake Murray; passenger hospitalized

CHAPIN, S.C. (WACH) - One person is dead after a boat crashed into a dock on Lake Murray early Sunday morning. According to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher, Jimmy Gene Ayers, 57, of Lexington died at the scene from multiple traumatic injuries to the upper body. Ayers sustained those injuries in the accident.

The coroner's report also state that Ayers' nephew was taken to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital with multiple non-life threatening injuries.

An autopsy will be performed on August 14th, 2017 to determine the cause of death for Ayers.

According to Capt. Bob Mccullough, spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the incident occurred around 6 a.m. near Wessinger Island and Heimatsweg Road on the Chapin side of the lake.

This incident is still under investigation. The Lexington County Sheriff's Department is aiding in the investigation, according to Capt. Adam Myrick of LCSD.
