Police: Employee acting in self-defense during armed robbery shooting Thursday night
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – Police say an employee at a local Chinese restaurant was acting in self-defense when he shot a man Thursday night, according to the Columbia Police Department.
The man was shot and killed during the incident at the China Kitchen at 2419 Forest Drive just before 11 p.m.
Officers were called to the location because of a reported armed robbery. Officers then found a man on the ground with a gunshot wound to the upper body when they arrived at the scene.
Officers found out the man was the armed robbery suspect after an investigation and while speaking with witnesses and patrons.
The suspect is accused of entering the store and demanding money from employees at gunpoint. The suspect was initially accused of victimizing two women employees while demanding money form the register. The women immediately ran to safety at another location inside the restaurant.
Another woman employee heard the commotion at the front of the store and reported that the suspect also pointed a gun at her to demand money.
The woman complied with his demands and while she was opening the register to hand over the cash, she was able to grab his gun. During the struggle between the woman and the man, a co-worker/relative came to the front of the store, saw the incident happening and used his handgun to shoot the man.
The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. No charges will be filed against the employee since he acted in self-defense.
