Overnight officer-involved shooting near Irmo
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - There was an officer-involved shooting near Irmo early Tuesday morning.
The Lexington County Sheriff's Office received a call just after 2:30am for a welfare check from a home on White Falls Drive in the ColdStream subdivision.
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) spokesperson Thom Berry said a man from Florida was visiting his brother at the home and was suicidal.
The suicidal man was shot by a deputy.
He was then taken to Palmetto Health Richland, where he is in surgery.
Sheriff Lewis McCarty has identified the man as 59-year-old Kimber Key.
McCarty says Key's older brother called 911 to seek help for his brother.
When the deputies arrived, they found Key in the kitchen wielding a knife.
The two deputies involved are not injuried.
The deputies have now been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice with an officer-involved shooting, according to McCarty.
The shooting is under investigation by SLED.
This is the 15th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year that SLED has investigated.
