Fort Jackson soldier charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty

Kurt Hafner (Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center)

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott has announced the arrest of a Fort. Jackson soldier for multiple counts of animal cruelty.

Kurt Hafner now faces 24 counts of ill treatment to animals. Twenty-three dead reptiles and one dead dog were found inside Hafner’s home on Meredith Square, April 10.

Investigators were notified about numerous dead animals inside Hafner’s home during an eviction April 10. Investigators, along with snake experts from All Things Wild, found the dog, along with turtles, bearded dragons, lizards and various snakes.

Investigators also found out that Hafner abandoned his home in February, leaving the animals without food and water.

Lott says the department takes cases like this one seriously and that if you know anything about abuse to animals to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
