SC hospitals welcome Hurricane Maria victims
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) —
Between Sunday evening and Monday night, local hospitals and healthcare facilities will receive patients evacuated from the Carribean islands due to hurricane damage.
Military planes will land at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport and bring a number of patients. They will go to various hospitals in the area depending on treatment.
This effort is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Defense's Federal Coordination Center and the South Carolina Forestry Commission's Incident Management Team. Their focuses include making sure patients are received, as well as tracking them during their treatment.
Patients began landing at CAE around 5 p.m. on Sunday. The number of patients and the time of their arrival is unknown.
This is the first time the United State's Federal Coordination Center has been activated.
