Sumter family seeks closure after man shot and killed

SUMTER, SC (WACH) -- 4-year-old Kayden Harris' father was found dead last Saturday in Sumter.

Deputies said Jarvis Rush was shot and killed. The 34-year-old was found in a grassy lot.

Just after midnight last Saturday, deputies said Jarvis was walking from McDonald’s on LaFayette Drive. Ten hours later, they got a call about a man found dead next to a church on East Newberry Avenue.

Ree'Neeka Harris is Rush's girlfriend and mother of their child, she said their son is missing a father, and a best friend. "He was a good fella,” Harris said. “He didn't bother a soul, all he did is work and home and play with the kids all day,"

She said Jarvis texted her just minutes before deputies said he was shot. "When nighttime falls it hits him [Kayden], and he says what he says,” Harris said. “We just want justice and peace for him."

Sumter County Sheriff’s Department is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.

Deputy Ken Bell is hoping the reward money will help gets investigators some answers. "We are trying to get the public, someone who might have seen something heard something or know something,” Bell said. “To let us know."

A vigil in Jarvis’ memory was held Friday night at the place where his body was found. "We just come from viewing the body,” Harris said. “And that was not the view that we wanted to see of him, we are not used to seeing that view of him, we just want justice." For a family and a little boy now missing a big part of their lives.

If you have any information on this shooting, you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
