Two inmates at Bennettsville prison go live on Facebook

Bennettsville, S.C. (WPDE) — The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) is investigating after two inmates at Evans Correctional Institution in Bennettsville used a cell phone to go live on Facebook, according to SCDC Public Information Director Sommer Sharpe.

The men used profanity and one held a knife in the 3.5-minute video.

This comes after a series of similar incidents at local jails and prisons.

Authorities said an inmate coordinated with others via cell phone and was able to escape from Lieber Correctional Institution in Columbia last month.

The inmate was captured three days later in Texas.

Inmates in one dorm at Evans Correctional Institution were placed on visitation restriction last month for security reasons stemming from a contraband overthrow, according to Sharpe.

ABC15 News received information from SCDC back in June that correctional officers have seized 562 cell phones and cell phone parts from inmates at Evans Correctional Institution in the past three years.
