COLUMBIA, SC (WACH)- Two elected officials have been arrested and charged with DUI in a span of a week.

Eleventh Circuit Solicitor Donnie Myers was arrested after crashing into a pole last Monday. Richland County councilman Kelvin Washington was released from jail Sunday afternoon after crashing into a car with two people inside Saturday evening.

This was Myers' third alcohol-related incident since 2005 and Kelvin Washington's second arrest in 2016.

John Crangle, Director of Common Cause SC says, "Public officials certainly are going to be scrutinized more carefully than an ordinary citizen would be and they should be extra careful about their own personal conduct."

According to Crangle, the public does not have the power to oust public officials in South Carolina. If convicted, Kelvin Washington would be removed from the County Council because he was charged with Felony DUI.

Councilman Seth Rose says it would be in the best interest of the public for Washington to step down. He says, "I'm of the personal opinion that he should take some time to address these issues and allow someone else to fulfill his council duties. As to this incident I'm praying for everyone involved."

As of now, both Washington and Myers have not made any comments on the incidents.
