55-year-old Joe Thomas Sr. all smiles at South Carolina State University's 2017 graduation.

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- Nearly six months after living out his dream of playing Division I college football, Joe Thomas Sr. checked off another milestone on Friday by graduating from South Carolina State.

"It's been a long time coming," said Thomas Sr. with a smile on his face. "God is good. I never gave up."

On November 19, 2016, Thomas Sr. became the oldest person to ever play in a Division I football game. Not only did he get into the game but on his very first play, the 55-year-old took a hand-off and rushed for three yards. His story went national, capturing the hearts of fans that expanded from the gridiron and beyond reminding us all to never give up on our dreams.

With a degree in hand, Thomas says that he plans on expanding his construction business in Columbia while also coaching high school football. WACH FOX sportscaster Mike Uva caught up with Thomas Sr. before South Carolina State University's commencement ceremony to share his thoughts on finally being able to achieve a dream that he never quit on.
