Cardinal Newman wins Nike Palmetto Cup
The Cardinal Newman boys soccer team took home the Nike Palmetto Cup on Thursday with a 1-0 win over Lexington in the championship game.
The two teams remained scoreless for much of the contest until the 72nd minute when Cardinals star Grayson Barber scored on a header off a free kick to give the Cardinals the edge. Barber was named the MVP of the tournament and will play soccer at Clemson.
"The goal was quality!" Cardinals head coach Will Eudy said. "It was a quality ball and a quality finish from Grayson."
Coach Eudy said he's happy with the level his team has played at this week. The Cardinals went undefeated in this week's tournament and only allowed 1 goal from their opponents all tournament long.
Eudy said, "Our back line and our goal keeper were brilliant. When you only give up one goal, it's hard to beat us."
The Cardinals are now looking forward to the playoffs in May where they hope to be playing at their peak ability.
"We scored a lot of goals and most importantly our defense held up," tournament MVP Grayson Barber said. "It just feels good that it took a whole team to get this victory."
