The South Carolina men's basketball opened their 2018-2019 season with a 65-52 win over USC Upstate at Colonial Life Arena on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks were led by freshman forward Keyshawn Bryant (21 points, 7 rebounds) and senior forward Chris Silva (13 points, 11 rebounds).
Tuesday night's game was unique for South Carolina head coach Frank Martin, however, as his son Brandon, a freshman at USC Upstate, played his first collegiate game with the Spartans.
Brandon Martin scored six points and had one rebound in his first college game. He had friends and family cheering him on behind the Gamecock bench.
"Three days ago, we (he and his dad) started talking about the game and he just asked me questions about college basketball," Brandon Martin said. "He always tries to give me advice and keep my head leveled up."
For Frank Martin, it was one of the more memorable ending to a games he's ever had... when he had to go and shake his son's hand after the game was over.
"I didn't wanna separate him from his team in that moment," Frank Martin said. "But, at the same time, I needed to make sure that he knew that I was proud of who he's become, who he's grown into, and to stay the course."
South Carolina (1-0) is back at home on Friday night for their second game of the season where they will host Stony Brook. Tip-off for that game is at 7 pm on Friday, November 9th at Colonial Life Arena.
