Turf beginning to be installed to Columbia Fireflies' stadium

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- Opening Day for the inaugural season of the Columbia Fireflies' baseball team is a little more than a month away, but the organization took a big step Tuesday morning to help complete Spirit Communications Park.

Crews were out early Tuesday morning to start installing turf on the new field. The crews began working around 5 a.m. and it will take the next two days to complete the field. One part of of the concourse is also expected to be finished soon.

Spirit Communications Park will seat 9,000 people and Opening Day at the stadium is set for April 14th.

Tickets are still available, but very limited for that home opener against the Greenville Drive. The season will also bring many daily promotions like Military Monday for military appreciation and Budweiser Thirsty Thursdays.

There will be 25 fireworks shows throughout the season and the park will be transformed into a water park every Sunday, except for the Sunday after the home opener.
