Gamecocks softball notch first 40-win season since 2003

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- For the first time since 2003, the South Carolina Gamecocks have won 40 games in a season.

On Saturday, USC earned their 40th win of the year defeating Mississippi State 8-1. The victory also secured their fourth SEC series win as they'll look to sweep the Bulldogs tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM.

Prior to this season, head coach Beverley Smith's most wins at USC was 38 (20015 and 2016). But with four games to go in the regular-season and with the SEC Tournament and National Tournament approaching, the Gamecocks have a chance to smash that mark.

From 1988-2003, South Carolina finished with 40 wins or more in 13 seasons. All of those 40-plus win seasons were under legendary head coach Joyce Compton. Until today, no Gamecock team had recorded a 40-win season without Compton at the helm.

After their series with Mississippi State, South Carolina will host the College of Charleston on Wednesday before traveling to Kentucky to closeout the regular-season.
